Interns and Co-ops
As an employer are you...
-
looking for technical assistance with a project?
-
needing temporary help to support an increased workload?
-
having trouble in a competitive market hiring full-time
engineers and thinking that a feeder system for full-time
conversions would be helpful?
-
interested in providing professional experience to a student
pursuing engineering or computer science?
-
thinking about trying out candidates before bringing them on
board as full-time employees?
Then consider hiring an Intern or Co-op student from the KU School
of Engineering!
Hiring Interns or Co-ops provides numerous benefits to employers.
Most importantly it serves in educating and training the next
generation of professional engineers beyond the classroom. The
Engineering Career Center can provide information about setting up
programs and assist in identifying KU candidates.
Important details about how the programs work at KU:
Summer Internships: These types of opportunities are very popular
with Engineering and Computer Science students at KU. Students are
interested in summer internships that allow them to work 8-10 weeks
during the summer in career-related positions. They typically
prefer experiences in which they would be exposed to professional
engineering assignments allowing them to gain real-world learning
and exploration.
Part-time Internships: This type of program is traditionally
offered during the fall and/or spring semesters where students work
part-time hours while going to school full-time. This is an
excellent opportunity for students to gain professional experience
while taking classes. Employers offering this type of opportunity
tend to be very flexible with a student's school schedule allowing
them to work a few days a week or a few hours each day.
Cooperative Education Opportunities (Co-ops): A limited number of
students choose to participate in co-op opportunities each semester.
Historically, the types of co-ops of greatest interest to KU
students involved back-to-back work assignments which include a
semester plus the summer break (e.g. January-July or June-December).
Students receive course credit and remain in full-time student
status.
