Build Your Visibility on Campus
Recruiting is relationship building. The processes and programs
that you use to recruit students say a lot about your company.
Building a relationship with the campus and career services office
is critical to successful recruiting. Relationship building is a
year round process and can take several years before an organization
establishes a brand or image on campus.
Below are a few programs to assist you in building relationships on
campus. For more information, please contact ecc@ku.edu.
-
Mock Interviews & Resume Critiques —
Participate in a day or half day of mock interviews or resume
critiques with students. Engineering Career Services promotes
your visit to campus and arranges a schedule of students for you
to meet with. Provide students feedback on their interviewing
skills or professional tips on their resumes. This is a win-win
situation as our students will feel more confident and better
prepared for the job market and you will gain the opportunity to
promote your organization's name and meet quality candidates for
the future.
-
Information Sessions — Conduct an evening
or afternoon information session in Learned Hall. We suggest
using an interactive format where students can mix and mingle
with recruiters as opposed to a formal presentation. Also, be
creative! Use a creative title for your evening information
session to attract students. Suggestions include "Late Night
with ________"; "Mix at Six"; or "Hawk Talk". You might also
consider forming the theme around a food item — "Late
Night" could be popcorn and prizes for movie tickets; or "Hawk
Talk" might involve sending your KU alums to talk to students.
The Engineering Career Center reserves the room, food and media
equipment for you!
-
Your Company Day — Designate a day for
your company to be on campus, e.g. XYZ Corporation Day. Reserve
a table in the Engineering courtyard or outside of the computing
labs to greet students as they come out of class or enter the
building. Hand out goodies or food to promote your
organization. This is an informal way to market your company
and reach out to numerous students. The Engineering Career
Center can help make the arrangements on campus.
-
Career Fairs — Reserve a table at the
Fall or Spring Engineering & Computer Science Career Fairs.
This is an excellent way to showcase your organization and
connect with students. Check out information on our upcoming
Career Fairs.
-
Evening With Industry — This event is
held the night before the Fall Engineering & Computer
Science Career Fair and is sponsored by the KU Chapter of the
Society of Women Engineers. Reserve a table for your company
and send a representative to connect with students at dinner.
For more information, please contact Florence Boldridge,
Director of Diversity Programs at fboldridge@ku.edu.
-
Network With Student Organizations —
Contact a student organization and offer to provide a speaker
for a chapter meeting or send a few representatives to review
resumes of members. Be creative and contact the student
organization's faculty advisor for advice on what works best for
the group. See our list of student
organizations
-
Advice & A Slice — Visit campus to
conduct a lunch hour information session, provide pizza, and
present a topic of your choice to the students. Examples of
topics include, Resume Writing Skills, Interviewing Skills, My
Career as an Engineer, How to Network with Professionals, or
other topics of your choice. Contact the Engineering Career
Center for assistance.
-
Connect With Faculty — Attend the
Employer/Faculty Reception offered the evening before the Spring
Engineering & Computer Science Career Fair. Other ideas
include inviting faculty members to lunch or dinner. Send a
company representative to present information about the company
to members of the faculty or keep the session informal and enjoy
interacting with faculty members over a meal.
-
Senior Design Projects — This is an
excellent way to establish a relationship with an engineering
department. Do you have a project that you would like to
outsource? Consider allowing undergraduates to tackle your
project and produce deliverables. Work directly with the
department to sponsor a real world engineering or computer
science project. See our list of academic departments in the School of
Engineering.
-
On Campus Interviewing — Conduct on
campus interviews in the fall or spring semesters! This is an
excellent way to promote your organization's name. The
Engineering Career Center manages the interview schedule for
you! For more information contact Lindsey McCaig in the
Engineering Career Center at lmccaig@ku.edu.
