Minority Engineering Programs
Student organizations are an important part of the KU success story.
They are a natural means for leadership development, as well as
outreach opportunities.
National Society of Black Engineers
The KU chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers was formed
in the early '70s. The national organization, with more than 10,000
members, is one of the largest student-run organizations in the
country.
The KU chapter closely follows NSBE's mission, which is to increase
the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel
academically, succeed professionally and positively affect the
community. NSBE comprises more than 300 chapters on college and
university campuses and more than 80 alumni extension chapters and
interest groups in the United States, Asia, Canada, Africa, England
and the Caribbean. The chapters are divided geographically into six
regions. To find out more about the national organization, please go

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in
California by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los
Angeles. Their objective was to form an organization of
professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic
community.
The KU student chapter of SHPE began in the early '90s and has
continued to thrive as a major organization within the School of
Engineering.
The concept of networking was the key basis for the organization.
SHPE quickly established student chapters to begin the network that
would grow to encompass the United States, as well as other
countries. Today, SHPE enjoys a strong but independent network of
professional and student chapters throughout the nation.

American Indian Science and Engineering Society
The American Indian Science and Engineering Society's mission is "to
substantially increase the representation of American Indian and
Alaskan Natives in engineering, science and other related technology
disciplines."
The University of Kansas chapter holds its meeting with the AISES
chapter of Haskell Indian Nations University also in Lawrence.
