Self Engineering Leadership Fellows (SELF) Program

Tailgate

A few SELF Fellows assist with registration activities at the KU School of Engineering Homecoming Tailgate for alumni.

The SELF program is about leaders, not test scores.

Goal-oriented, involved students who want to pursue a future in engineering or computer science at the KU School of Engineering can apply for the Madison A. and Lila Self Engineering Leadership Fellows Program. The SELF Program combines an enviable 4-year financial package with an enrichment program designed to help ambitious students become leaders in technology and business.

Students in the SELF Program will expand and refine their leadership, business, entrepreneurial and engineering skills through mentoring, coursework and seminars, as well as leadership opportunities. The goal is to develop graduates who have a passion for technology and the skill set to guide the tech-based corporations of tomorrow.

While good grades are important, they aren't the only consideration. About 15 incoming freshmen with a track record of motivation, leadership and action will be selected for this innovative program.

SELF Fellows will receive an outstanding enrichment and leadership program paired with $4,000 in fellowship funds in both the freshman and sophomore years and $6,000 in each of the junior and senior years.

About the Benefactors

The SELF Program was made possible through a generous donation to the KU Endowment by Madison A. and Lila Self. The Selfs established the program with the intent that it makes a difference in the lives of students who will then rise to make a notable difference in the world. Madison "Al" Self is a 1943 KU chemical engineering graduate, successful businessman and recipient of the School of Engineering's Distinguished Engineering Service Award in 2000. The Selfs, native Kansans who met at KU, have been long time and generous supporters of the university.
